Who Should Apply?
Goucher's Environmental Studies graduate program distinguishes itself from the field
of environmental science programs by preparing graduates to work with communities,
to engage the public as well as scientists and engineers, enabling them to critically
assess competing solutions to environmental problems. Our curriculum draws upon the
social sciences and perspectives from the humanities, including theories of political
and cultural change, to address long-term outlooks, conditions, or probabilities.
Our approach is that natural science is necessary but not sufficient for addressing
environmental problems; and 2) that scientific literacy achieved through the study
of scientific methodology is necessary to be effective. Students will be able to
produce, analyze, and understand scientific reports, for instance, even if they are
not trained in the specialized sciences upon which they are based. Candidates for
this degree will have a strong interest in working across disciplinary sectors and
with multiple stakeholders on environmental questions and issues.
