Graduate Studies in Environmental Sustainability & Management

Our interdisciplinary program will train you to understand and address environmental problems and provide viable approaches to deal with environmental threats

This program in Environmental Sustainability & Management (M.A.E.S.) trains you for a wide range of meaningful environmental careers—whether in corporations, government agencies, consulting companies, or nonprofit organizations.

Regardless of your level of experience in the environmental field, our program will give you the tools necessary to leverage systemic linkages to address complex environmental threats.

Program Overview

This program combines courses from the natural and social sciences into a cohesive framework that will train you to:

  • Assess environmental threats and their effect on communities and organizations
  • Select suitable strategies that could mitigate and/or adapt to those threats, taking into account ethical, regulatory and cultural contexts
  • Communicate the effectiveness and trade-offs of those strategies to decision-makers and communities

The program consists of seven core courses, four electives, and one capstone course; all of which are offered entirely online with the option of in-person classes for some core courses.  This hybrid format gives you the flexibility of choosing the modality that best fits you.

Upon the completion of this program, you will be able to select and implement strategies intended to improve the overall health of natural environments while meeting the specific needs of stakeholders, organizations, ecosystems, and governments.

A distinctive feature of our program is its reliance on systems thinking as a management approach.  Systems thinking is a framework that permits a holistic examination of the linkages and interactions among the components that comprise an organization, a community, and/or an ecosystem in relation to its surrounding environment.  As a result, you will gain an advanced understanding of environmental systems and processes to allow you to devise policies and practices involved in the management of natural resources.
