What do you find unique to the program?

"The M.A.C.S. program at Goucher College is taught by an outstanding group of professors and instructors who bring a variety of unique experiences to their classes.  The professors are knowledgeable, but at the same time, they are helpful and "down to earth."  They treat students as colleagues and professionals, not as numbers.  The professors encourage us to pursue our own unique interests and offer valuable advice and insights."

 

What has stood out to you about Goucher's Cultural Sustainability program?

"As a student with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, I was surprised at how little I knew about cultural sustainability and folklore prior to the program.  I have been impressed with the variety of new topics that I've been introduced to.  The program has taught me to see the world and its variety of unique cultures from multiple viewpoints and introduced me to new ways of thinking and considering global and local problems."

 

How does the limited residency format support your busy schedule?

"The limited residency program fits in perfectly with my busy life.  I work full-time, and I'm able to take two courses per semester in the evenings after work and complete the complete the readings, homework, and projects at my own pace.  The residency visits to Goucher College's beautiful campus are a great way to interact with professors and fellow students each year.  The field trips are always interesting and fun.  And since we know each other on a personal and professional level, it's easier to engage in group work and online discussions throughout the remainder of the year when we're all at home in our own communities."

 

How has the program's coursework impacted your professional work aspirations?

"What I appreciate most about the coursework of is that I can apply what I'm learning directly to my career, even as I'm learning new topics from one week to the next.  The variety of courses available allows me to choose the subjects that are most interesting and relevant to me, and I can tell that I am more aware of the big picture in relation to managing a non-profit organization and serving the needs of culturally-diverse clients.  The program has also helped me focus my future career goals by introducing me to topics such as the sustainability of refugee folk arts. "

 

What would share with incoming students about your experience in the program?

"I would encourage prospective students to have a focus group or community of interest in mind prior to beginning the program.  It's more meaningful to be able to apply the coursework directly to a cultural group that you are genuinely interested in working with.  Also, I would always encourage students to get to know their professors.  Build relationships with them, network, and don't be afraid to ask questions or seek their advice.  Take advantage of the opportunities that are offered to you, such as attending conferences or going on field trips.  Each new and unique experience will make you a well-rounded individual and have a meaningful impact on your academic life and professional career!"
