M.A.T Area of Certification
Elementary Education Certification (grades 1-6)
A total of 40 credits is required to complete this program. In addition to the 24 basic M.A.T. required credits, 16 credit hours of required courses in the elementary certification program include Three credit hours in core courses: ED 604 Contemporary Issues in Education OR ED 681 Curriculum Development for a Multicultural Society
Thirteen credit hours in instructional courses:
- ED 627 Survey of Advanced Methods and Strategies in Reading Instruction
- ED 628 Teaching Reading Through Text
- ED 629 Reading Assessment
- ED 683 Acquiring, Extending, and Using Knowledge in Science
- ED 684 Acquiring, Extending, and Using Knowledge in Social Studies
- ED 685 Acquiring, Extending, and Using Knowledge in Mathematics
Secondary Education Certification (grades 7-12)
A total of 40 credits is required to complete this program, along with an undergraduate major in the content area. Content areas for certification include: Biology, Chemistry Earth/ Space Science, English, History, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies and Theater. In addition to the 24 basic M.A.T. required credits, 16 credit hours of required courses in the secondary education certification program include
Six credit hours in core courses:
- ED 604 Contemporary Issues in Education
- ED 681 Curriculum Development for a Multicultural Society
Ten credits in instructional courses:
- ED 630 Advanced Methods and Strategies in Secondary Reading Instruction,
- ED 693 Methods and Strategies in Secondary Education
- ED 694 Methods and Strategies in Secondary Education,Part I and Part II
Special Content Areas (Grades Pre-K through 12)
A total of 40 credits is required to complete this program. Students in the Pre-K through12 areas follow the course requirements above for secondary certification students. The certification areas for Pre-K through 12 are: Art, Chinese, Dance, Environmental Education, ESOL, French, German, Latin, Music, Russian, and Spanish.
Ten credit hours in instructional courses:

- ED 693 Methods and Strategies in Secondary Education
- ED 694 Methods and Strategies in Content Area, Part I and Part II
Special Education Certification (Secondary, Grades 6-adult)
A total of 44 credits is required to complete this program. In addition to the 24 basic M.A.T. required credits, 20 credit hours of required courses in the secondary special education certification program include Three credit hours in core courses: ED 604 Contemporary Issues in Education OR ED 681 Curriculum Development for a Multicultural Society
Five credit hours in instructional courses:
