B.A./M.A. in Teaching

4+1 Accelerated Masters

Master of Arts in Teaching program offers efficiency by allowing students to earn both a bachelor's and master's degree in a short timeframe, leading to early career advancement and cost savings. This provides earlier career entry, specialized expertise, and access to career advising, thus enhancing students’ competitiveness in the job market. Additionally, it fosters networking, leadership skills, and career flexibility, making it a valuable choice for those passionate about teaching. Students who meet all program requirements exit the graduate program eligible for initial teaching licensure in the state of Maryland. (These requirements will be reviewed by your academic advisor.)

  • Elementary Special Education (grades 1-8)
  • Secondary Education (grades 7-12; Biology, Chemistry, Earth/Space Science, English, History, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies)
  • Secondary Special Education (grades 6 through adult)
  • PreK-12 Specialty Areas (grades PreK-12; Art, Dance, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Environmental Education, Music, Theater, or World Languages (i.e., Chinese, French, German, Latin, Russian, Spanish)

Who Can Apply for the B.A./M.A. in Teaching?

Goucher undergraduates in the second semester of their sophomore year, who have completed a minimum of 45 undergraduate credits, are eligible to apply. 

How Does the 4+1 Accelerated Masters Work?

  • Candidates are eligible to begin taking graduate courses during the first semester of their junior year and can take up to 15 graduate education credits that will count towards both their undergraduate and graduate degrees.
  • The graduate credits are billed at the undergraduate rate while the student is working towards their B.A.
  • Once the student graduates with their B.A., they have already made progress toward their M.A.T.
  • As a graduate student, you pay graduate tuition rates/fees.

How To Apply to the B.A./M.A. Accelerated Masters

Applications are considered once each academic year. Apply by April 2nd of your Sophomore year. Interested Goucher undergraduates must provide the following:

  • Completed online application specific to the 4+1 accelerated master's (no application fee required).
  • Your most current cumulative Goucher GPA (3.0 minimum GPA is required), information regarding your major and/or minor, and anticipated undergraduate graduation date.
  • One letter of recommendation from someone who knows you well enough professionally or academically to give an informed opinion of your intellectual ability, capacity for sustained self-directed study, personal qualifications, and professional potential. The recommendation process is completed online through the graduate admission portal.
  • Your current Goucher College advisor’s name and email. As part of the application process, students will need an endorsement from their undergraduate education advisor.
  • A written essay (1-2 pages, double-spaced in 12 pt. font) answering the following question: What are your professional goals, and how will this accelerated master’s program help you achieve them?

Candidates will be informed of their admission status within 7-10 business days of submitting a full application.
