Exhibit Dates

Incidental Monuments: Designing With Discards , will be presented at Goucher College’s Silber Art Gallery in the Sanford J. Ungar Athenaeum from February 1 to March 14, 2020. This exhibit, which is free, open to the public, and accessible to all, can be viewed Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Artist Reception

About the Exhibit

Incidental Monuments highlights artists and art practices that consciously repurpose everyday, overproduced materials. Beginning from a student data-visualization project on the volume of non-recyclable plastic utensils discarded on campus each semester, the exhibition recognizes the formal and individual efforts of artists working within a similar set of concerns. Using the student installation as a thesis, the exhibition brings together artworks that question the way we regularly use, dispose of, and often forget about certain materials. 

While the show does not argue that individual responsibility is greater than that of corporations and industries, it asks its viewers to evaluate their relationship to mass-produced material and examines the campus microcosm as a venue to change behavior and policy.

This exhibition is co-curated by Alex Ebstein (gallery director) and Amy Boone-McCreesh (adjunct faculty for data visualization course)
