Fall 2010 Peirce Center Fellow

The Brooke and Carol Peirce Center for Undergraduate Research in Special Collections at Goucher College has named Daniel Benyishay '11 as the Fall 2010 Undergraduate Research Fellow. Benyishay, an English and philosophy major, will receive a stipend to research the history and provenance of the college's Oberdorfer Mark Twain Collection to create an online exhibit.

Eugene Oberdorfer began collecting Mark Twain editions before his marriage to Lala Hirsch '24, who donated the works to Goucher's Special Collections in 1970 after her husband's death. The collection includes more than 250 works in their original bindings and housed in gold-stamped custom slipcases; there are also serial publications, documents, and broadsides.

Brooke Peirce (1922-2003), a Goucher College professor of English for more than 30 years, and his wife, Carol Peirce (1922-2005), a longtime English professor at the University of Baltimore, dedicated their lives to scholarship and teaching. The Peirce Center operates in the spirit of their commitment to providing superior higher education and their enthusiasm for the treasures to be found in Goucher's Special Collections and Archives.

Peirce Undergraduate Research Fellowships are designed to provide the opportunity for an in-depth research project that takes advantage of the rich resources in Special Collections and Archives at the Goucher College Library.
