Learning Goals & Outcomes

Minor in Africana Studies

Students in the Africana Studies program will learn:

  1. An anti-essentialist or diverse perspective: Students learn about how Black identities are defined and understood within continental Africa and throughout the African Diaspora.
  2. A rigorous methodological perspective: Students are exposed to multiple research methods in order to interrogate the Black world, such as: qualitative and quantitative methods; archival research; theoretical framing; empirical; comparative and/or content analysis; etc.
  3. An interdisciplinary perspective: Students interrogate the Black world from multiple scholarly viewpoints.
  4. An intercultural perspective: Students learn about how external and internal forces have shaped cultural exchanges between peoples of continental Africa and the African Diaspora.
  5. You will critically evaluate your own work and the work of others, and you will effectively communicate your evaluation in writing and speaking. (IAS 407)
  6. You will develop and demonstrate your skills as an effective collaborator. (IAS 490)
