Associate Professor Ailish Hopper: "What to America is John Brown?"

Peace Studies Associate Professor Ailish Hopper was featured on Salon.com with the essay “What to America is John Brown?” Hopper writes about “the instructive dissent of social movements” and John Brown, the abolitionist known for his raid on an armory in Harper’s Ferry, VA, that led to his execution in 1859. In connecting his story to the ways dissent is repressed today, Hopper discusses how such repression is lethal to society and undermines the freedom to pursue knowledge.
