Bachelor of Arts in French Transnational Studies

Program Goals for French Transnational Studies Major

  1. Oral skills in French that allow them to communicate accurately and with nuance in a range of settings from informal to professional, including study abroad and an internship, but also at on-campus events.
  2. Literacy skills that allow them to understand authentic French-language media, including film and literary texts, as well as newspapers and formal academic writing, and the ability to bring an interdisciplinary approach to bear on objects of study.
  3. Analytic skills that allow them to interpret accurately and with nuance French-language media, including film and literary texts, as well as newspapers and formal academic writing. This includes the ability to evaluate cultural and historical contexts and understand their relationship to literature and other cultural productions. 
  4. Intercultural knowledge and skills that allow them to negotiate social exchanges in French-speaking immersion settings abroad, and to situate the singularity of French and Francophone cultures as well as their own culture in a broader context.
  5. Knowledge of how the methods of literary, cinematic, and social and historical analysis can be drawn on to yield insights about contemporary French and francophone cultures, including transnational phenomena extending beyond the francophone world.

Program Goals for French Transnational Studies Minor

  1. Oral skills in French that allow them to communicate at the B1-B2 level (European proficiency standards)  in academic as well as concrete living situations
  2. Literacy skills that allow them to demonstrate understanding of authentic French-language media, including film and literary texts, as well as newspapers and formal academic writing, and the ability to bring an interdisciplinary approach to bear on objects of study.
  3. Analytic skills that allow them to interpret accurately and with nuance French-language media, including film and literary texts, as well as newspapers and formal academic writing.
  4. Intercultural knowledge and skills that allow them to situate the singularity of French and Francophone cultures as well as their own culture in a broader context.
  5. Participation in immersion opportunities, including study abroad, as well as departmental and campus-wide events, with the goal of promoting growth in language skills, intercultural understanding, and academic achievement in French and Francophone studies
