Jeffrey Chappell

Director of Jazz StudiesMusic

Jeffrey Chappell, the Director of Jazz Studies at Goucher College, is an innovative educator who places importance on the goals of each individual student. He is a classical concert pianist, a jazz musician, a recording artist, an award-winning composer, and a journalist for music magazines. He has performed throughout the United States and in Europe, Asia, and Latin America with major symphony orchestras, at jazz festivals, and at venues including Carnegie Hall. He is in demand as a teacher of music teachers, giving workshops on improvisation sponsored by affiliates of the Music Teacher National Association. He was a scholarship student of Leon Fleisher at the Peabody Institute and of Rudolf Serkin and Eleanor Sokoloff at the Curtis Institute of Music. He also studied at the BMI Advanced Musical Theater Workshop in New York City. In addition to Goucher, he has served on the faculties of The Catholic University of America, The Baltimore School for the Arts, and The Levine School of Music. He was also the director of the Goucher Summer Arts Institute Summer Jazz Camp. His students have been accepted to The Juilliard School, Yale University, Columbia University, and Princeton University, among others.

Research, Scholarship, Creative Work in Progress

Jeffrey Chappell continues to be an active performing musician and recording artist throughout the United States and abroad. A major focus of his current work is Otherworld, the contemporary jazz quartet comprised of Chappell and three Goucher alumni who were Music Department students. Their 2015 debut album, heard on national and international radio, won a Global Music Award, and they continue to build a following through live performances and live stream video.
