Collecting Stone from Stimson Hall

Dear Goucher community,

As part of the current construction of the Lewent Science Center, we wanted to share an update on other construction activities that will be taking place around Stimson Hall over the coming weeks.

Building on our commitment to environmental sustainability and resource conservation, construction crews have started gathering Butler stone from the perimeter walls surrounding Stimson Hall to reuse on the ground-level façade of the new Lewent Science Center. Butler stone is a granite-like building stone quarried near Butler, Maryland, used extensively in local construction. The Butler Quarry is one of the oldest continuously operating quarries in the country and has been a major source of this popular building material for over a century.

Throughout Goucher’s 287-acre campus, Butler stone is a defining feature represented in the architecture from the campus’ earliest buildings to its most recent. Goucher has historically worked to preserve the stone from its buildings and repurpose it to maintain the campus’s design continuity.

The current work at Stimson Hall does not impact members of the campus community, since the building is already decommissioned and should not be accessed by anyone other than those authorized to be there. Signage has been posted to remind everyone to keep out of the work area, and all signage should be followed by anyone who walks around the area.

Thank you,
