2020-2021 SEASON OVERVIEW

The 2020-2021 season will be unlike any other for the Goucher College Choirs. One choir has a new name (the Goucher Chorus is now the Goucher Choral Society). Both choirs have changed rehearsal times. Our performances this year include two large events in our own Kraushaar Auditorium, along with performances in Carnegie Hall and Washington, D. C. All of this while Goucher College Music rolls out its new music minor!

But this year begins in a most unusual way. Never again (we hope) will we begin a year not knowing if it is safe to sing together! Some of you may have seen stories about this, so I'll address it right off the bat. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some studies have suggested that singing may pose a higher risk of infection, and therefore choirs should not operate until a vaccine is widely available and more effective treatments are in place. At this moment, a new, more comprehensive study supported by numerous music organizations throughout the world is underway to assess that level of risk of infection while performing in a music ensemble. I will be closely monitoring any findings from this and any other studies and will communicate with the choir regarding how our semester will run. If I come to the conclusion that in-person singing is not safe at the moment, the ensemble will continue in a different format.

Therefore, anyone interested in any music ensemble should go ahead and enroll as we work to determine the safest route to continue making music together at Goucher College. Assuming we are able to proceed in the fall, I am exploring multiple programs for a variety of performance options. I have so many potential pieces we might look at, but since I have as many as 4 plans for the fall at the moment, I won't list them all here.

For the spring semester, we hope we will be able to proceed as planned, and given the big plans we have, we all should hope it will! We have three big performances, including:

  1. With One Voice Choral Festival. We will welcome a number of invited choirs from the Baltimore region to our campus to put on one big concert together. This year we will have Dr. Anthony Leech, professor emeritus at Penn State, to join us as a guest conductor.
  2. Performance at Carnegie Hall. In April will come an opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City in a collaborative performance with other choirs from across the United States. We will perform Morten Lauridsen' modern masterpiece, Lux Aeterna. There will be a cost associated with this performance, which we will discuss along with fundraising opportunities in the fall.
  3. Mozart's Requiem at Goucher and in Washington, D. C. Finally, in May we will perform a reprise of Lauridsen's piece along with Mozart's enduring Requiem, one of the greatest works of art in the choral canon, together with the Deer Creek Chorale and the George Washington University choirs. We will give a performance in Washington, D. C. on Saturday, May 1, and here on our campus on Sunday, May 2.

And if that's not enough, we have the graduation ceremonies at the end of the year to look forward to, which will include TWO commencements this year for the classes of 2020 and 2021. In so many ways, this will be an unforgettable and unprecedented year in the Goucher College Choirs!
