Goucher students and faculty honored for science fiction works
Goucher’s science fiction community continues to be recognized for its work. The Hugo Awards have named the Kratz Center’s writer in residence, Sarah Pinsker, a finalist for “Best Novelette” for her work “Signs of Life.” The Hugo Awards are the preeminent awards celebrating works of science fiction and fantasy. Pinsker previously won Hugo Awards for her short story “Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather” and for her novelette “Two Truths and a Lie.” She has also received many other awards for her work, including four Nebula Awards. The 2025 Hugo Awards will be announced August 16.
In addition, creative writing seniors Dylan Halsted and Jadyn Straigis were awarded honorable mentions by the 2025 Dell Awards. The Dell Magazines Award for Undergraduate Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing are awarded to full-time college students for unpublished short stories. Halsted was selected for the story “Beast of War” and Straigis for “The Anomaly.” Halstead was also named an honorable mention last year for the story “Armageddon.txt,” and Straigis was named an honorable mention in 2023 for the story “The Ivory Peak Hotel.”
