Goucher College Business Circle Welcomes BGE CEO Calvin Butler

70 Maryland Business Leaders Met to Discuss Jobs of the Future and Evolving Marketplaces

  • President Bowen welcomed BGE CEO Calvin Butler, Goucher College Board of Trustees members, and students to the Goucher College Business Circle event on October 31, 2017.

This morning, more than 70 leaders in the Maryland business community gathered for the Goucher College Business Circle, which welcomed Calvin G. Butler Jr., chief executive officer, Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) as keynote speaker. Hosted by Goucher President Dr. José Antonio Bowen, Mr. Butler discussed the importance of innovation, hiring lifelong learners, and how teamwork is essential in today’s evolving marketplace.

In addition to Dr. Bowen and Mr. Butler, notable attendees included Mike Gill, secretary, Maryland Department of Commerce; Christian J. Miele, Maryland State Delegate; Timothy Regan, Whiting-Turner president and CEO; Robert “Willie” White, Maryland Horse Breeders Association president; Doug Brinkley, senior managing director, Cushman & Wakefield; and Bill Pugh, Apex Tool Group vice president of sales and marketing.

“If you learn how to learn, you can do anything you want,” said Mr. Butler of the connection between a strong educational foundation and success in business. At BGE he believes the jobs of the future will be focused on problem solving, data analysis, and lifelong learning.

To prepare students for the jobs of the future, Dr. Bowen discussed how Goucher College is focusing on an integrative new curriculum that concentrates on complex problem solving across disciplines and with diverse groups. “Crucial to students’ learning and success in both college and beyond, is the ability for students to work with others from a variety of backgrounds and to build strong relationships, learn to be resilient, and reflect on their work and experiences,” said Dr. Bowen who created Goucher’s 3Rs that emphasize the importance of relationships, resilience, and reflection.

The Goucher College Business Circle connects business leaders from across Maryland, Baltimore County, and the city of Baltimore. The event emphasizes the strong connection between the highly-educated talent pool available and the key business leaders in the area. The next event is scheduled to take place in spring 2018.
