Two faculty members receive Independent Artist Awards

The Maryland State Arts Council announced the recipients of the 2022 Independent Artist Awards on February 16, which include two Goucher College faculty members. Associate Professor of Peace Studies Ailish Hopper and Assistant Professor of Creative Writing Edgar Kunz ’10 have been recognized as regional awardees, which comes with a $2,000 grant to support a creative project.

The awards this year focused on the literary arts and are intended to recognize the winners’ achievements while supporting their artistic growth.

“This award honors new poems—work from my next book—so I’m particularly happy for the encouragement,” says Hopper. “What I submitted is somewhat surrealist and genre-blurring; I’ve been taking more risks, and that makes the recognition not only sweet but a relief.”

Kunz was also awarded for his work as a poet. “What an honor to receive this support from the Maryland State Arts Council, and alongside so many writers I admire!” he says. “In a time when arts budgets are being slashed and artist grants are evaporating, all gratitude to MSAC for continuing their vital work.”

Sixty-nine artists were chosen out of nearly 300 applicants by a public panel process; that two of them were Goucher professors is a notable achievement.

“It means a lot to be recognized alongside so many great artists in the state—including Edgar!” Hopper added. “I have so much respect for his work, and appreciation for him as a person.”
