Community rallies support for building Science Innovation Center

Alumnae/i spanning decades, retired professors, parents, trustees, and other members of the Goucher community have come together to endorse the new Science Innovation Center. Since the announcement of the project’s $10 million lead gift and donor challenge earlier this fall, a cross-section of supporters has committed more than $3 million to build the annex to the Hoffberger Science Building.

“Goucher has a wonderful history of preparing students for careers in the basic and medically related sciences. It is a true strength of the institution,” said George Delahunty, emeriti biology professor, who made a gift to support the construction of the Science Innovation Center. “I was happy to spend my 40-year career as a scientist and educator helping to keep that tradition alive and well. It is now time to ensure that the science program at Goucher has the modern facilities necessary to prepare students for successful careers.”

The new science facility will feature interdisciplinary learning environments and state-of-the-art labs, which will expand faculty and student hands-on research opportunities like Goucher’s Summer Science Research program. The Science Innovation Center will also allow for Goucher’s prestigious Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program to expand and help prepare more students to study medicine.

The need for a new science facility transcends generations, as an anonymous donor and her family, a mother and daughter, who are both Goucher alumnae, have also stepped up to support the Science Innovation Center. The donor shared that although she was not a science major, she is supporting this project because of her immense gratitude for the experience she had at Goucher and her belief in supporting college initiatives. 

“It’s a testament to the commitment our Goucher community has for the new Science Innovation Center to see such a range of supporters step forward in response to the donor challenge and make gifts to support this vital project,” said Michele Ewing, Goucher’s vice president for advancement. “We have a little way to go to make this project a reality, and our alumni and friends are demonstrating through their giving that it is a top priority.”
