Elizabeth Spires’ collection named best poetry of 2018
A Memory of the Future named to The New York Times Book Review's best poetry list.
The New York Times Book Review has published a list of the best poetry collections of 2018, and English Professor Elizabeth Spires is on the list. Her latest book, A Memory of the Future, meditates on “the limitations of memory, mortality, and the boundaries of human existence,” according to publisher Norton.
Of Spires’ collection, The New York Times Book Review’s poetry columnist, David Orr, writes, “The spare, sly lines … are a reminder that the game of a poem is sometimes better advanced by underplaying.”
Elizabeth Spires is Goucher’s Chair for Distinguished Achievement and the author of seven collections of poetry and six children’s books.
The feature story will run in the Book Review section of the newspaper on Sunday, December 16. For the complete list of best poetry collections of 2018: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/10/books/review/best-poetry.html
