What Will You Learn?
The B.A. + M.H.S. pathway provides a rigorous, STEM-designated curriculum that blends undergraduate and graduate study in the social and behavioral sciences of public health. Students complete a mix of classroom courses, seminars, and independent study, while developing advanced research and analytic skills. The program culminates in a mentored research project and a master’s thesis, allowing you to present original research and contribute to solutions for today’s most pressing health challenges.
DoWhat Will You Do?
What can you do with a degree in Health Science?
Graduates of this combined bachelor’s and master’s in public health program pursue careers as research associates, policy analysts, project managers, health communication specialists, and foreign service officers. Many also continue their studies in Ph.D. or DrPH programs. With advanced training in social factors in health and extensive research experience, you will be prepared for leadership roles in public health research, policy, and practice.
Course Curriculum
The program consists of one and one-half to two years of full-time study, combining classroom-based coursework, seminars, and independent study. Students must also complete a mentored research experience, which includes the development of a research plan. Students must also write a master’s research thesis presenting original research (in most cases based on the mentored research experience). The research experience, planned with the guidance of the student’s academic adviser, may begin after successful completion of 64 credits, typically at the end of the first year, and must include the equivalent of 600 hours of activity in a paid or unpaid position.
After the completion of 64 credits, students in good academic standing are eligible for a Master’s Tuition Scholarship (MTS) from the School. The MTS provides 75 percent tuition support during year two of the program.
During your senior year at Goucher, you may take a minimum of 6 credits and up to a maximum of 21 credits of coursework at Hopkins. You need to work with your advisor to obtain reciprocal credit at Goucher for the coursework at Hopkins.
You need to apply by or before July 1. This is the final deadline for students who have completed their junior year at Goucher to submit applications, and July 15 is the final deadline for supporting application documents (recommendations, transcripts).
