Carla Barqueiro
Director, Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics, Assistant Professor
Dr. Carla Barqueiro is Director of the Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics, and an Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Goucher College. She has worked in academia for several years, developing a burgeoning research and teaching agenda in security studies and international relations theory. Her areas of research and teaching specialization include: human security; mass atrocities and genocide; gender, women, and war; Latin America politics; international relations theory; international law and diplomacy. She has published co-authored books, book chapters, and articles in these areas. Dr. Barqueiro’s work seeks to elevate diverse voices—those that are often marginalized in political discourse—and highlight how these perspectives can contribute to a deeper understanding of the politics of harm.
In addition to her work in academia, Dr. Barqueiro has worked in government in a multilateral diplomatic setting for the Permanent Mission of Canada to the Organization of American States on issues related to citizen security and hemispheric relations in Latin America and the Caribbean. She also worked in the non-profit sector on human rights advocacy and the prevention of mass atrocities and genocide at the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS). Dr. Barqueiro draws heavily on her multisectoral professional experience in her teaching and research.
