Goucher Announces Its Next President

Dear Goucher Community Members,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and members of the Presidential Search Committee, I am delighted to announce José Antonio Bowen as the 11th president of Goucher College, effective July 1, 2014.

Dr. Bowen will come to Goucher from Southern Methodist University’s (SMU) Meadows School of the Arts, where he is serving as the dean, professor of music, and the Algur H. Meadows Chair. During his long tenure as an educator, Bowen has demonstrated strong leadership in instruction, entrepreneurship, diversity, global citizenship, and community engagement—all complements to Goucher’s core values. His professional experience and commitment to higher education, particularly the liberal arts, will help reinforce the college’s outstanding academic program, its ties to the community, and its excellent national and international reputation.

If you would like to learn more about Dr. Bowen and his many accomplishments, click here to visit the Goucher website dedicated to our next president.  There, you can read our press release of the official announcement, learn more about Dr. Bowen’s accomplishments, and even send a personal greeting welcoming him to our community. We will keep you apprised of future opportunities to welcome him to campus in person.

During the last several months, the Presidential Search Committee was guided in large part by what you told us was most important for Goucher in its next decade. Many of you attended sessions with the candidates during the search process, and we gained much insight from your questions and comments.

We sought a leader who could help us build on the traditional strengths and recent successes of this unique institution—someone committed to the transformative potential of liberal arts education and whose values aligned with the bright possibilities we envision for Goucher’s future. After engaging with the entire community and with those who know Dr. Bowen’s talents and achievements, we firmly believe we have found such a leader.

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve Dr. Bowen as the college’s next president.  We believe José Antonio Bowen has come along at the exact right time to lead our college into its next phase of excellence.

As President Sanford J. Ungar passes the torch to Dr. Bowen, Goucher is in a very strong position to confront the conflux of challenges U.S. colleges and universities are facing. With profound appreciation to Sandy Ungar for his leadership over the past 13 years and with great excitement for the future of Goucher College, I hope you will join me in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Bowen and his family.

Sincerely,

Norma Lynn Fox ’76
