In the Dark: An Exploration of Chronic Illness

Exhibit Dates: October 5 - December 5, 2023

Goucher is pleased to present In the Dark: An Exploration of Chronic Illness, an exhibition of new handmade cyanotype photographs by Baltimore-based artist duo DanaidX.

DanaidX, whose name culls from a Greek myth about women cursed by the gods to endlessly fill a cistern riddled with holes, is the collaborative formed by writer/data engineer-cum photographer Hope Brooks and artist Angela Yarian.

With a wide-range of archetypal visual references from art history to punk-rock, to science-fiction, Brooks and Yarian’s images of the female body in everyday domestic life explore the space between creativity and pain in quotidian experience.  In so doing, the works invite viewers to question their own understanding of such concepts as rest, wellness, work/life balance, vulnerability, and the passage of time.

Goucher is pleased to present R.L. Tillman: Life During Wartime, an exhibition of new, text-based print works that draw a parallel between World War I-era signage and social media engagement. In his minimal, text-based screen-prints, R.L. Tillman explores the prevalence of superficial, commodifying appraisals that are typical of Instagram and Facebook commentary. Presented in grids and clusters similar to wheat-pasted marketing campaigns, the repeated, disembodied proclamations create a jarring experience of omnipresent consumerism and valuation, often supplied by an obscured or anonymous source.

Michael Stevenson

Michael Stevenson: Your Strengths Made You Stronger When You Were Younger

Exhibit Dates: Friday, February 24, 2017 – April 9, 2017

Michael Stevenson’s paintings in Your Strengths Made You Stronger When You Were Younger are affirmations of action in the face of uncertainty. They are metaphors for the need to move forward even when the direction is unclear. Drawn from ideas arising out of recent political changes and the artist’s personal experience over the last couple of years, his work’s motifs are forms outlined but not described, narrative suggested but not explained—the paintings are mute and stubborn in their being, but are still there. The history of the paintings’ makings are part of the experience the paintings give, like a wall covered in posters, torn.
