Laura Burns

Assistant ProfessorStudio Art

Laura Burns is an Assistant Professor of photographic studies within the Center for Art and Media. As an undergraduate, she studied French Literature and Dance at the University of Maryland, College Park where she received a BA in French. Years later while exploring the world and playing the electric ski, she received an MFA in Photography from the Yale School of Art. From 2006 to 2007, she was a Fulbright Fellow in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. She has taught at the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez and at the Maryland Institute College of Art. In addition, she has conducted photographic workshops in various Mexican cities. Her work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and Mexico, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and in numerous private collections. Burns describes her courses as follows, "My courses focus on curiosity and intellectual development through the medium of photography. I want students to ask questions that they cannot possibly answer in one semester. To me, that is the most powerful type of learning. On a practical level, I can teach you to better understand your camera so that it becomes a more useful and articulate tool.

Research, Scholarship, Creative Work in Progress

Burns current video work is part of an ongoing exploration which uses landscape to consider the in-between, the overlooked and the ordinary. Using imagery that is spatially fixed but that moves through time, her videos grapple with distinctions between still and stillness and play with the idea of the photographic decisive moment.
