Planning, Design & Construction

The Planning Design and Construction department within Facilities at Goucher takes care of all things related to building projects from managing our large multi-million-dollar new buildings and renovations to relocating offices, modernizing classrooms, and purchasing furniture on our beautiful 287-acre campus.  Our campus located in Towson Maryland is comprised of approximately 1,100,000 square feet of classroom, office, residential, and recreational space.  We are always looking for ways to make our facilities better and to improve the way our community learns, works, and plays.

Current & Planned Projects

As Goucher navigates a new era in higher education, our modernized curriculum and state-of-the-art facilities will enhance the college’s focus on innovation. This has already begun with the completion of the First-Year Village and Mary Fisher Dining Hall in fall 2018. We have other projects being planned.

Architectural History

Goucher College’s architectural legacy is linked through stone buildings that are the center of both the historic downtown campus, begun at St. Paul and 23rd streets in 1885 and which moved to the sylvan Towson campus in the mid-forties to mid-fifties.  The old Goucher Historic District was entered on the National register of historic places in 1978 where 18 of the original buildings were listed.  The Towson campus was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 because of its architectural and planning importance in the development of campus planning in the United States.  It was one of the first campuses plans in the country that was based on the principles of modernism (more Prairie Style than International) and emphasized keeping the natural rolling topography of the campus and using materials from the area vernacular.  For a fuller description of the campus history and buildings see the Special Collections Web Exhibit "Building a Greater Goucher: The History of the Towson Campus" , and the webpage "Buildings of the Goucher Campus".

Environmental Services

Environmental Services is committed to providing high quality services that results in clean, well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing facilities. One of our main objectives is focusing on customer service, teamwork, and creating an environment where our employees can learn and grow personally and professionally. Facilities Management Services can be considered the "heart" of the College’s operations. In performing our various responsibilities, we strive to cultivate individual honesty, integrity, exemplary customer service and excellence.

Operations & Maintenance

Facilities Management Services (FMS) provides maintenance services to the entire campus. As key stewards of the College’s facilities, FMS is responsible for facility assessments, skilled trades, general construction, building care, and the management of planned, corrective, and preventive maintenance.

FMS consists of Maintenance Support Shops, which includes HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Fleet Management, Lock and Carpentry. Work Requests can be created via the TMA FixIt form or by calling Work Management, 410.337.6166.

Campus Grounds

The Campus Grounds Department is responsible for the management of close to 300 total acres here at Goucher College. Of those 300 acres roughly 90 acres are “manicured” and the remaining 210 acres consist of the wooded areas as well as roadways. The Grounds team is responsible for items such as daily trash removal on the grounds, and maintaining the exterior athletic facilities. We respond to work requests issued by students and staff, perform horticultural maintenance of the trees, turf, and shrubs throughout campus, and operate the Goucher bus and other vehicles as needed.
