Teachers' Institute Faculty

Patricia Abrahms has taught technology courses at the high school and college levels for a number of years.  She teaches biology and environmental science at Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore and is a graduate of the M.Ed. in Educational Technology Leadership program at Goucher.  

Peggy Altoff is the K-12 coordinator of social studies in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and is currently  president of  the National Council for Social Studies. She served as the social studies content specialist for the Maryland State Department of Education from 1988 to 1993 and supervisor of social studies in Carroll County from 1993 to 2002.

Judith S. Bresler is a partner in the law firm of Carney, Kelehan, Bresler, Bennett, & Scherr, LLP, and represents the Boards of Education in Montgomery and Howard Counties.  She also is general counsel to the Frederick and Washington County Boards of Education.

Toni Carr currently is principal at Sunset Elementary School in Anne Arundel County. She has more than 20 years in special education as a school-based resource teacher as well as supervisory experience and staff training.

Sandy Dolan is director of  the Office of Academic Development  at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She has taught reading and counceling courses at Towson University and the University of Maryland.

Maureen Flanigan teaches a full-day special needs kindergarten program at Essex Elementary School.  She has 30 years experience working with special education students.

Judith Macks is a full-time instructor at Towson University where she teaches mathematics education courses. She has taught for Teachers' Institute since 1991.

Margaret Meacham has published 13 novels for children and young adults, including A Mid-Semester Night's Dream  and Quiet! You're Invisible.   She teaches writing and children's literature at Goucher College and Gotham Writers' Workshops and has lectured at schools, universities and conferences throughout the nation.  Her new book, A Fairy's Guide to Living with Humans, will be released this fall.

Warren Nelson has been part of the Teachers' Institute since its inception.  He teaches English in Harford County and offers multiple technology workshops for Harford County Public Schools as well as for Goucher.

Andrea Parrish currently works as a specialist in the Office of Special Education for Baltimore County Public Schools, providing instructional and compliane support to school teams, students, and families. She has provided special education services to students with autism as well as others with significant cognitive disabilities.

Claire Ritterhoff is retired from the Baltimore County Public Schools. Most recently, she was the reading specialist at Dumbarton Middle School, teaching developmental reading and reading interventions in grade 6-8. During her 31 year career, she taught reading , English, math, and special education at the elementary , middle, and high school levels.

Claire Salkowski is the founder and the head of the Free State Montessori School in Fork, MD.  Additionally, she is a mediator for the Sheppard Pratt Mediation Program and has taught graduate courses for Delaware State University and Towson University.

Marcie Zisow has taught in Maryland for over 20 years.  With a doctorate in Instructional Technology and Distance Education, she now works in Baltimore County's office of Instructional Technology and has presented digital storytelling workshops throughout the region.
