Professor Johnson's present research interests include the biology and ecology of zooplankton and of the fishes that feed on them in both salt marshes and coral reefs. He has published numerous articles in Ecology, Marine Ecology-Progress Series, Marine Biology, Environmental Biology of Fishes, and Advances in Marine Biology. Johnson serves as an ad hoc reviewer for research articles submitted to a variety of professional journals and has made numerous presentations at scientific meetings. He is a member of the Roatán Institute of Marine Science (Honduras) Scientific Advisory Board and has, for many years, taught a winter Tropical Marine Biology course there. He has received an NSF Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement (ILI) award to support instrumention and curricular improvements in his Environmental Biology lab courses. He has also organized two conferences on Goucher’s campus including the Benthic Ecology Meetings, which involved two day meeting of over 300 marine scientists from all over the United States, and the conference "Rivers and Streams-Lifeblood of the Bay". Professor Johnson is also involved in a variety community organizations dedicated environmental awareness education and ecological issues. His courses include Environmental Physiology and Toxicology, Ecology and Evolution, Field Ecology, Marine Ecology Seminar, Chesapeake Bay Ecology, and Biometry: Experimental Design & Analysis. Professor Johnson has served as chair of the department and as Faculty Chair.
