H.L. and Sara Haardt Mencken Collection

Bibliography by
KATHERINE S. BOUDE

THE FRIENDS OF THE GOUCHER COLLEGE
LIBRARY
1971

Published by the Friends of the Library in honor of Otto Frederick Kraushaar, in whose term as President of Goucher College the Friends of the Library was founded twenty-one years ago.

The Mencken Collection in the Rare Book Room of the Julia Rogers Library includes material from the bequest of Sara Haardt Mencken (Goucher, 1920), gifts from H.L. Mencken, and a large part of the collection of Francis Mitchell Froelicher which was given by Mrs. Milton C. Whitaker (Goucher, 1913) in honor of Dr. Hans Froelicher, her "most beloved Professor and acting President of the College."

The categories of this bibliography are partly modeled on the arrangement of Francis Froelicher's catalogue. Within each group, titles are arranged by year of original publication. Editions later than the original are accompanied by explanatory notes.

In preparing this bibliography, I have relied greatly on H.L.M. The Mencken Bibliography, compiled by Betty Adler (Baltimore, Johns Hopkins Press for the Enoch Pratt Library, 1961). Notes drawn from this book are given with the citation: Adler. For both book and advice I give grateful thanks to Miss Adler, (Goucher, 1937). Also I want to express appreciation of the help of my colleagues of the Goucher library staff.
