Special Collections

Hand-colored drawings of British antiquities made by Anglo-Saxonist and art historian John Mitchell Kemble (1807-1857). From the James Wilson Bright Collection, Goucher College Special Collections.

Goucher College’s Special Collections include both rare books and archival research collections. The rare book collection includes incunabulae, antebellum slavery titles, the history of costume, early children’s literature, Baltimoriana, collections of early art and literature, historical travel guides, and works by major American and English writers. Most of the rare books are described in the college library's online catalog.

Other research collections include personal papers, organizational archives, and special subject collections, with particular emphasis on literature, music, theater, and dance. Catalog descriptions of these research collections are gradually being added to the online catalog. To identify materials that are in the library's online catalog, use the advanced keyword search . The keyword could be a subject or a general description of a type of material, such as papers, records, scrapbook, or oral history. Select "Archival Matl" as the Material Type. The search may also be limited by date to identify archival collections whose span dates fall within a particular timeframe. A few collection guides are available online. To schedule an appointment or request information about the collections, please contact Contact  Special Collections Librarian and College Archivist Tara Olivero (410-337-6347).
