FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Goucher will have to settle for a split of this season's two-game series with Mary Washington because the Eagles avenged their one-point loss to the Gophers back on Jan. 18 by pounding head coach Leonard trevino's squad tonight, 90-54.
The Eagles (13-8, 8-3 Capital Athletic Conference) landed four shots from three-point range in the opening five minutes tonight in jumping out to a 16-8 lead. The Gophers were just 8-for-21 from the field (.381) in the opening 20 minutes of play and trailed by 30 at halftime, 48-18.
Even though Goucher's shooting percentage soared to .565 in the second half (13-for-23), the Gophers fell behind by as many as 40 points on five different occasions and never knocked their deficit below 30 points.
Four of Mary Washington's starters and one reserve tallied at least 10 points in tonight's win. Mike Lee, who was held to four points in the Gophers' 68-67 triumph over the Eagles last month, led the way with 19 points.
James Russo (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) produced 19 points to capture scoring honors for Goucher (1-19, 1-10 Capital Athletic Conference). He made three shots from three-point range, boosting his 2005-06 total to 77 and breaking the single-season school record he established a year ago when he connected 76 times from long distance.
Jonathan Garritt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park), who poured in a career-high 32 points and hit the game-winning three-point basket at the buzzer in last month's victory over Mary Washington, supplied the Gophers with 16 points tonight.
