TOWSON, MD — Goucher, hoping to avoid a third loss to Salisbury in 2005-06, overcame a five-point deficit in the second overtime tonight and went ahead 80-79 on a three-point basket by Jonathan Garritt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) with :55 showing on the clock. But Segun Odumeru responded with a three-pointer of his own and later converted 1-of-2 free-throw attempts to help the Sea Gulls come away with an 83-80 victory over the Gophers.
The Sea Gulls' fate was nearly sealed in regulation, but Kyle Harmon's follow of a missed shot by Odumeru dropped just as the buzzer was sounding, creating a 61-61 tie. Garritt scored five points in the final 1:14 of the first OT, which ended with the two teams deadlocked at 72-72.
The Gophers (1-18, 1-9 Capital Athletic Conference) trailed by as many as five points in the second extra session before Garritt's three-pointer provided them with the 80-79 lead. The senior guard launched another three-point try with :02 showing on the clock that, had it gone it, would have tied the score at 83-83, but it was off the mark.
Still, Garritt finished with 27 points, sharing scoring honors for Goucher with James Russo (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney). In addition to his 27 points, Garritt had a team-high eight rebounds, was 10-for-12 at the free-throw line, handed out six assists and made four steals.
Tim Merritt (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) and Justin Ajose (Washington, DC/Wilson) supplied the Gophers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Odumeru was the leading scorer for Salisbury (12-9, 6-4 Capital Athletic Conference) with 22 points. Ray Williams added 21 as the Sea Gulls ended a three-game losing streak in the SRC.
