A lot of people these days seem to get hung up on the question of what a college education will do for them.
We think that’s the wrong question entirely.
Of course, you’ll want an education that prepares you to succeed in your life after college. And Goucher College will do that for you, no question. But we prefer to define success in broader terms that go beyond what any one individual does in his or her particular job, career, or field. To us, success is providing an education that leads to a fuller, richer, and more satisfying life not only for every student who makes his or her way through our academic and co-curricular programs, but also for the many people with whom our students come in contact when they venture out into the world.
That’s sort of what we’re getting at when we talk about what a Goucher education means. Because it does mean something to have pursued your education here. And though you would probably get a hundred different answers if you asked a hundred Goucher graduates what this college meant to them, you would also probably be able to pretty easily pick out some common themes—about learning to think globally, about being a responsible citizen of the world, about using your education to make a difference in whatever communities you become a part of throughout your life, about continuing your pursuit of learning and understanding wherever you go.
We’re in the process of developing a whole new section of our website that gets into all these different dimensions of what a Goucher education means, and you’ll find that here soon. In the meantime, you can start getting a better idea of what it means to have a Goucher education by making your way through the rest of this site—or, better yet, coming to visit us in person.
And for a great overview, we recommend starting right here.
