A Transforming Vision

In May 2002, Goucher College adopted a sweeping new strategic vision aimed at expanding the college’s engagement with the world around it, energizing the living and learning environment on campus, and exploring even more intensively the myriad dimensions of diversity, in all its forms, both within the Goucher community and outside its gates. At the same time, the Goucher Board of Trustees unanimously approved our plan literally to bring new life to our campus by expanding the college and increasing the size of the undergraduate student body, in increments, to 1,400 by 2005 and, later, to 1,500.

Our vision is rooted in the belief that in the 21st century, every academic inquiry and intellectual endeavor must have a global context. We have completely reimagined the ways in which we will provide this kind of education, and we will transform our curriculum, our campus, and our community to attain our goals. Every student who enrolls at Goucher College will gain firsthand experience with the international and intercultural aspects of his or her course of study through intensive programs connecting classroom learning with hands-on work in the local community, around the United States, and overseas.

We will build an Athenaeum, in the classical tradition, housing an expanded library, dining facilities, performance and lecture halls, group study space, and other common areas, that will serve as the intellectual, social, technological, and cultural center of the Goucher community.

We will increase the size and diversity of our student body and faculty while enhancing selectivity-working to attract and retain the best and brightest scholars we can find.

With the encouragement and participation of friends, supporters, alumnae/i, and people from throughout the Goucher College community, we will expand, enhance, and reinvigorate the intellectual, cultural, and social life of Goucher College, affirming its role as a major influence in Baltimore and in the mid-Atlantic region.

During the year since we adopted our new strategic plan, we have made significant progress in creating the foundation upon which its innovations will take place. Over the next several years, we can all look forward to witnessing the launch of a variety of exciting new programs, to participating in an array of new opportunities, and to seeing the Goucher community grow and evolve in just about every way imaginable. Goucher College will emerge from this process a stronger, more energetic, and slightly larger institution than ever before. Its influence will be felt, in ways both subtle and sweeping, throughout higher education, throughout the communities around us, throughout the nation, and throughout the world.

On the following pages, we will share with you what we have already done to get this process underway.
