Let's start with some practical information first as the Medical School Admission Requirements will have a significant impact on your academic schedule beginning in the freshman year. The premedical course requirements dictated by the medical schools are as follows:
1 year General Chemistry (Freshman Chemistry with lab), Chemistry 111/152
1 year Organic Chemistry (with lab), Chemistry 230/235.
1 year Biology (with lab), Biology 104/105.
1 year Physics (either Calculus or non-Calculus) with lab, Physics 115/116 or Physics 120/121.
In addition, about 20 out of the 120 medical schools require calculus, either one or two semesters, depending upon the school. There are other humanities and social science course requirements, but these are minimal and are easily met by fulfilling the liberal arts distribution requirements for a Goucher degree.
Also, the one year of Biology actually leaves an applicant under prepared for medical school work and the Medical College Admission Test. In our experience competitive applicants for medical school will have taken additional biology courses, especially Cell Biology and Lab (Biology 210/215), Genetics (Biology 220) and Animal Physiology (Biology 260). In addition Biochemistry (Chemistry 341) and Developmental Biology (Biology 378) are highly recommended.
