Online Mathematics Placement Exam

Purpose of the Placement Exam

This placement exam is purely for advisory purposes and will only be used to place you into your first Mathematics course. Results from the exam will not become a part of your record. It is our intention that this exam place each student accurately, indicating the best initial course in mathematics. However, you do have the right to question the correctness of your placement and may do so by contacting the chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

If it has been a while since your last Mathematics course, we suggest you spend a few hours reviewing algebra before taking this exam. Doing so will increase the accuracy of your placement result.

Instructions

You should not use any computer algebra system (Maple, MatLab, etc.) or any graphics calculator (TI-82/85, Casio 7700/8700, etc.) to answer the questions. You may use a non-graphing calculator. You should not consult books or other materials as aids in answering the questions. You should complete the exam in one sitting. Have paper and pencil ready for working on the questions.

We'll begin by asking you a few questions about your high school Mathematics preparation. Then, you'll begin the exam, which is multiple choice. You will be presented with one question at a time. At the bottom of each web page you'll find buttons for navigating through the exam. Please use them. Do not use your browser's Back and Forward buttons. After completing the questions, you will have one last chance to review your answers. Then you'll be asked to confirm the information you gave regarding your high school preparation. Following that, you will receive your Mathematics placement recommendation and a tally of the number of questions you correctly answered, and the Mathematics and Computer Science Department will receive a copy of your results for advising purposes.
