THE ALUMNAE/I PRIZE IN PHYSICS

The Alumnae/i Prize for Excellence in Physics is awarded each year to a student who has distinguished him or herself through outstanding achievement in the field of physics, as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 3.5 or higher in the major, and has displayed significant promise in independent research, as evidenced by publication in a scholarly journal or a presentation to the scientific community beyond campus borders.

The Alumnae/i Prize for Service in Physics is awarded each year to a student who has distinguished him or herself by exemplary service to the Physics program and greater community, both inside and beyond Goucher's borders.

Internship Information

Off campus internships provide valuable experience in work settings that can lead to informative career choices. Opportunities are available for students to work in industry or at research institutions in the Baltimore are. The Career Development Office (CDO) has a packet of forms and information for you, including a checklist of the necessary actions you must take. The 'Off Campus Experience' does not have to be fulfilled through an internship, nor do internships need to be undertaken in the summer; however, it is anticipated that most physics majors will do so.

Here are some direct links to institutions in the area:

Internships located across the nation include:

Timetable for Summer Internships (check the exact dates with CDO):

Junior Year
Mid-October It is very important to start the search for an internship no later than about mid-October, especially when considering federal government internships or REUs which commonly have deadlines in the fall or very early spring.
Mid-April Deadline for the Goucher Summer Internship Awards. Many of these awards are restricted as to use, but there's no harm in applying.
Mid-May Deadline for filing your Internship Learning Agreement (ILA); Dr. Pichler is currently designated as the Faculty Internship Sponsor. You should also register for PHY 290 if the internship is related to physics.
Late August Submit any required written work, sign your 'Performance Evaluation,' and complete the 'Student Evaluation of Internship Experience' form.

Keep in mind that, as a physicist, you are qualified for any position involving problem solving; do not restrict yourself to 'physics' jobs only. Try also positions with financial institutions, engineering, computers, and whatever else comes to mind.
