Registering for Classes & Housing

One of the most important things you will need to do in order to prepare for your return to Goucher is to register for classes. Please read this section carefully.

Please be aware that it is your responsibility to register for classes while you are away. If you follow this guide, you should not encounter any problems. However, be sure to contact us if you have questions or difficulties.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES WHILE YOU ARE ABROAD

1. Be aware that students register for spring semester in November and for fall semester in April. We will contact you via email with information regarding registration. It is your responsibility to keep in touch with us so that you are informed, whether you are in class or traveling on a break. We recommend checking your email at least once a week.

2. The Academic Catalogue is on Goucher’s website in the Academics section if you need to read course descriptions.

3. When the Course Schedule is finalized by S.A.S., it will be posted on Goucher's website and we will send you an e-mail reminder. It will then be your responsibility to fill out the Course Selection Form by choosing your courses for the semester you return to campus and e-mail it to your Academic Advisor. The Course Selection Form can be found on our website. Your Academic Advisor must approve your classes and send the approval to S.A.S. If any classes are closed and further changes need to be made, you will need to work directly with your advisor. OIS cannot approve classes or make changes for you. You do not need to copy us on any messages regarding on-campus course registration. In addition, please be aware that the Office of International Studies has no control over when the Course Schedule is finalized. Check the website for the new Academic Schedule one week prior to the published registration dates. To find the Course Schedule, go to the Goucher home page (http://www.goucher.edu). Then, go to the site map. Click on Goucher Academics. Click on View Course Schedule under Course Information.

4. Please remember that we do not have the power to act as your academic advisor; therefore, we cannot approve course selections/changes or return your registration form for you. Our office will send an e-mail to your academic advisor to remind him/her that you are abroad and must be registered for classes prior to the published registration dates. Be aware that contacting your advisor may be difficult during this busy time. Persistence and patience will be required.

REGISTERING FOR HOUSING

If you are abroad during the spring semester, you must fill out a proxy form and preference card prior to departure. If you go abroad during the fall semester, you only need to fill out a preference card. These forms were distributed during the general Predeparture Orientation. The proxy form allows someone else to draw a room for you based on your choices and what is available. If you don’t have a proxy, contact Residence Life. They are happy to select a room for you. If you do not submit the appropriate forms before leaving, Residence Life will choose a room assignment for you.

In addition, you MUST pay a housing deposit of $100.00 by December 1st if you are returning in spring and April 1st if you are returning in fall in order to be considered for housing. If your deposit has not been turned in by the appropriate deadline, housing will be assigned to you, on a space-available basis by Residence Life after all other students have made their choices. Checks should be sent to S.A.S.

Keep in mind that if you are abroad during spring semester and returning in fall, you will also need to pay the $500 Enrollment Deposit by April 1st.
