Applications for Goucher Financial Aid for Second Semester Study Abroad on Goucher Language Immersion Programs for Fall 2012
Students pursuing a major or minor in a foreign language, Peace Studies or International Relations with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, who are interested in carrying their institutional financial aid for a second semester on a Goucher language immersion program (or in the case of Peace Studies and International Relations, on a program where the student will take at least three credits of a foreign language) need to submit a petition to the chairs of the Hispanic Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department, the Modern Language, Literatures and Cultures Department, the Peace Studies Department or the Political Science/International Relations Department.
This petition should include a letter explaining their proposed plan, including the specific program(s) for their second semester abroad. This letter should also address the importance of this second semester abroad to their major/minor and the advantages to be gained by this second semester abroad. This letter must be accompanied by 1) an unofficial transcript, 2) a letter of recommendation from a member of the Goucher faculty and 3) a form indicating (with signatures) the approval of the student's advisor and the chair of the department of his or her major.
All applicants must send these materials to their respective chair by Friday February 10, 2012. Following review of the petitions, the chairs of Peace Studies and Political Science/International Relations will rank applicants and forward their materials to the Chairs of the Hispanic Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department and the Modern Language, Literatures and Cultures Department by Thursday February 16, 2012. The chairs of these two departments will meet on Friday February 17 and then submit an overall list of up to six students to the Office of International Studies by Monday February 20. Preference will be given to language students but if six students from the languages are not chosen, the remaining slots will be awarded to the applicants from Peace Studies and International Relations. OIS will inform the chosen students of the decision and these students will have until Friday February 24 to be advised in the Office of International Studies and pick up their Goucher study abroad application.
If fewer than six students are chosen, these spaces will be available for students who want to apply for a second semester of study abroad for Spring 2013. Students will apply through the same process as listed above, with the understanding that no more than six students per academic year can carry their institutional financial aid for a second semester on a Goucher language immersion program. Application dates and deadlines in September 2012 for Spring 2013 study abroad programs will be available by March 1, 2012.
