Aided by the college’s long-standing commitment and sensitivity to community needs, the service-learning program has been at the forefront of exposing Goucher students to real-world diversity. Students build skills in team-based problem solving, outcomes-based learning, and critical thinking. Through their service experiences, Goucher students begin to live and breathe the civic values their instructors can often only describe.
Through service-learning, Goucher students can build and reinforce vital relationships with local schools and community service organizations, adding real value to real-world social initiatives. Service-learning can also lead to an internship that fulfills the three-credit Off-Campus Experience requirement, and, in turn, can lay the groundwork for lifelong commitment to involvement and community action.
Whether pursuing careers in community-service fields, paying off college loans by performing service work, or volunteering in service projects on a part-time basis, students go on to engage in service activities throughout their lives. Recent graduates have worked in the Peace Corps, Teach for America, and AmeriCorps programs; as community organizers; and as counselors and advocates for victims of domestic violence.
