Eighteen Goucher science and mathematics students who have spent the summer doing research will present their findings on Thursday, August 5, in the Batza Room of the Athenaeum. Talks will be held 10-11:45 a.m. and 12:30-2:30 p.m. All members of the Goucher community are invited to attend.
The following students will make presentations:
Jeffrey Bessen and Abigail Bickford will present "The Mechanism of Formation of Hemozoin, the Malaria Pigment: Kinetic Studies as a Function of pH and Temperature." Bessen and Bickford completed this research with guidance from Esther J. Gibbs, Department of Chemistry.
Amory Brandt will present "tfiia-s-2 encodes a male germline-specific homolog of the General Transcription factor TFIIA gamma subunit in Drosophila melanogaster." Brandt completed this research with guidance from Mark Hiller, Department of Biology.
Michael Garman and Yan Zhuang will present their video "Superconducting Properties of MgB2 in High Magnetic Fields and Low Temperatures." Garman and Zhuang completed this research with guidance from Sasha Dukan, Department of Physics.
Kathleen Hearl will present "Defenses of the salt marsh grass Scirpus americanus against the salt marsh periwinkle snail, Kittoraria irrorata. Hearl completed this research with guidance from Dr. Cynthia Kicklighter, Department of Biological Sciences.
Amanda Lee and Noah Robinson will present "The role of downstream DNA structure and sequence in transcriptional pausing by E. coli RNA polymerase." Lee and Robinson completed this research with guidance from Judith R. Levin, departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry.
Eli Woodoff-Leith will present "Charge transfer in photochromic switches." Woodoff-Leith completed this research with guidance from Kevin P. Schultz, Department of Chemistry.
Kirkbride Loya will present "Multiresponsive photchromic switches." Loy completed this research with guidance from with Kevin P. Schultz, Department of Chemistry.
Hillary Merrill and Elizabeth von Ende will present "Efforts Toward the Construction of Spirocyclic Amines." Merrill and von Ende completed this research with guidance from Ruquia Ahmed-Schofield, Department of Chemistry.
Jeff McLeod will present "Is Mechancial Allying an Innovative Method of Material Synthesis for Reactions of Low Exothermicity?" McLeod completed this research with guidance from Ali Bakhshai, Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Kelley Moran will present her video "Modeling Gastric Emptying." Moran completed this research with guidance from Gretchen Koch, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
Kelsey Osha and Jennifer Roche will present "I Knew This Was Going To Be Hard!: Hindsight Bias in a Change Detection Paradigm." Osh and Roche completed this research with guidance from Jennifer McCabe, Department of Psychology.
Jonathan Susser will present "From the Lab to the Dorm Room: Metacognitive Awareness and Use of the of the Spacing Effect." Susser completed this research with guidance from Jennifer McCabe, Department of Psychology.
