Professor Slocum's research currently focuses on the regulation of pyrimidine metabolism in plants, employing molecular genetic approaches using the model plant
Arabidopsis. He has published 45 peer-reviewed research articles dealing with various topics in plant biochemistry, presenting his research at national and international scientific meetings. His research program has been funded by grants from NASA and the National Science Foundation (NSF) and private foundations and, over the past 20 years, he has directed 30 student independent research projects, many of which have led to student co-authored research articles. He has served as a grant review panel member for the NSF Metabolic Biochemistry Program (1997-2000). Slocum is a member of the Editorial Board for
Plant Growth Regulation (1993- ), has served on the Editorial Board of
Plant Physiology (1990-1992), and is an
ad hoc reviewer for several plant science journals. He has been a Visiting Research Scientist at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Biology at Cornell University and at the Biotechnology Institute at Penn State University. He has served as department chair and currently oversees administration of the departmental web site.
