The goal of Professor Shambaugh’s research is to elucidate the role of C-terminal Binding Protein (CtBP) in the developing mammalian embryo. This transcriptional repressor prevents cell death during development of the brain, vasculature, and skeletal system and thereby is essential to survival of the embryo. While a Visiting Associate Professor at University of Wisconsin Medical School, she helped to engineer a transgenic mouse line carrying a defective copy of the CtBP gene. She also has served as Visiting Faculty at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Science. Her research has been supported by the Research Corporation and her publications are found in juornals such as Developmental Biology, Journal NIH Research, and the Journal of Embryology and Experimental Morphology. She has presented papers at professional meetings such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Society for Developmental Biology and at the Quality Education for Minorities Conference. Professor Shambaugh contributed to the writing and implementation of an Undergraduate Biological Sciences Initiative Award given to the Biological Sciences Department by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and co-directed its Pre-freshman Enrichment Program. Her courses include Cell Biology and Biochemistry; Techniques in Cell Biology; Developmental Biology; and a Seminar in Evolutionary Mechanisms. Dr. Shambaugh serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Growth, Development and Aging. She has also served as President of Phi Beta Kappa, Beta chapter of Maryland, chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, chair of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division Faculty, and as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies.
