Women in Philosophy Workshop: Bridging Traditions

Goucher College is hosting the Women in Philosophy Workshop: Bridging Traditions, an inaugural two-day event that will feature 15 speakers with various philosophical expertise  and a panel discussion about mentorship for women within philosophy.

The workshop will be held in Heubeck Multipurpose Room on Friday, March 5, 8:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., and Saturday, March 6, 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Goucher students, faculty, staff, and the greater community are invited to come learn about the numerous philosophical traditions in which women engage and the ways that women support one another across these demarcations.

These featured speakers and lectures will be presented:

• Sybol Cook Anderson (St. Mary’s College of Maryland), “Why the Fight? Revisiting the Life and Death Struggle in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit”
• Namita Goswami (Depaul University), “De-Liberating Traditions: The Female Bodies of Sati and Slavery”
• Rochelle Green (Goucher College) and Shari Starrett (California State University, Fullerton), “Beauvoir’s Projects, Women, and Shared Hope: a Dialog”
• Chaone Mallory (Villanova University), “What’s in a Name? In Defense of Ecofeminism”
• Desirée Melton (College of Notre Dame of Maryland), “Experiencing Existentialism Through Theme and Tone: Kierkegaard and Richard Wright”
• Allison Merrick (Goucher College), “Nietzsche, Genealogy, and the Immanence of Critique”
• Kathryn Norlcok (St. Mary’s College of Maryland), “Recognition, Self-Inflicted Evils and Self-Forgiveness”
• Alexa Schriempf (Pennsylvania State University), “Disability Matters: An Argument for Diversifying Ability”
• Shannon Winnubst (The Ohio State University), “The Ethics of Pleasures”
• Feminist Working Group Initiative Panel, featuring: Celia Bardwell-Jones (Towson University), Rochelle Green (Goucher College), Chaone Mallory (Villanova University), Jen McWeeny (John Carroll University), and Lisa Yount (Savannah State University).
