Frontiers Expo: December 8, 2009

The Class of 2013 will showcase work from a variety of Frontiers courses on Tuesday, December 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Athenaeum.

The Frontiers 2009 Expo is an opportunity for first-year students to celebrate their accomplishments and sample the work of other Frontiers First Year Colloquia. Students will present a series of performances, panels, debates, poster sessions, film discussions, and galleries of original work in three sets of 20-minute concurrent sessions. The sessions explore such topics as “Profile of a Terrorist;” “Is Science Rational?;” “The Status of Biracial People in the United Sates;” and “The Experience of Espacio Educacion,” Goucher’s Saturday educational program with the local Latino community. Students will also discuss their creative processes and share original screenplays, fairy tales, and graphic novels.

The expo gives first-year students the chance to share excellent work; explore the threads connecting Frontiers’ diverse offerings; and get a taste of the variety, depth, and intellectual statisfaction of the liberal arts. Just as a Goucher education overall encourages students to cross boundaries and explore the meaning of global citizenship, Frontiers First Year Colloquium is designed so students - with the guidance of a skillful teacher - embark on a shared adventure that offers intellectual discovery and creative accomplishment.

Each Frontiers seminar draws on a professor’s passions, expertise, and creative interests of to investigate cutting-edge material. Unlike a survey course, each Frontiers seminar examines a particular question or topic in depth and from multiple points of view. Hallmarks of Frontiers are lively and informed class discussions; support in developing the skills of critical and creative thinking, reading, and writing; and the opportunity to work collaboratively with other students on a project that a group designs and develops independently. Each class operates as an engaged intellectual community, and class discussions are enriched by community-based projects, guest visits from experts in the Baltimore-Washington area, field trips, and opportunities for hands-on investigations.

The event is sponsored by the Frontiers Program. For more information, contact Barbara Roswell at broswell@goucher.edu.
