Prof. Hilgartner's research area is paleoecology. He uses the macrofossil seed record and the record of fossil birds to help reconstruct past environments, focusing on the Holocene (past 10,000 years) in the Chesapeake Bay region, the Bahamas and the Carribean. He also studies plant ecology in serpentine soils in the Bare Hills and Soldiers Delight areas of Baltimore County. His research has been published in journals such as Wetlands, Ecological Monographs and Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology. He is department coordinator for the upperschool science program at the Friends School in Baltimore and teaches ecology and environmental biology courses at Johns Hopkins University and Goucher College.
