Goucher College is pleased to announce the Elizabeth Deale Lawrence ’66 and Bryan Hunt Lawrence Prizes for Innovative Teaching, a new award to support recipients during their service in the Teach for America program or at a charter school.
Beginning this April, yearly prizes of $25,000 will go to two graduating Goucher seniors or recent alumni/ae who have committed two years to educating young people either through Teach for America or in a charter school. The awards are open to students in any major and are conferred by the provost, in conjunction with Goucher’s Office of Career Development.
In honor of this inaugural year of the prize, four students will receive awards. At this year’s Convocation, Molly Beckmann ’09, Zeke Berzoff-Cohen ’08, Kevin Cournoyer ’08, and Lindsey Hendricks ’09 will each receive prizes of $12,500.
The prizes are made possible by the generous annual funds donated by Elizabeth “Betsy” D. Lawrence, Goucher class of 1966, and her husband, Bryan “Hunt” Lawrence.
“At Goucher, we model our liberal arts curriculum to instill in students a love of learning, a respect for educators, and a commitment to serving others and their communities,” said Goucher President Sanford J. Ungar. “The Elizabeth Deale Lawrence ’66 and Bryan Hunt Lawrence Prizes for Innovative Teaching encapsulates all of these ideals, which are held so close at Goucher. We are very grateful to the Lawrence family for their generous contribution.”
Mrs. Lawrence earned a bachelor’s degree in classics from Goucher, a master’s of education from Bank Street College, and a doctorate in school and community psychology from Pace University. She works as a psychologist in her private practice in New York City.
Mr. Lawrence is an investment banker with Yorktown Partners Inc. in New York City.
