Goucher College’s Musical Theatre Workshop Presents “Nine”

Release date: May 07, 2009 |

Goucher College’s Musical Theatre Workshop will present a production of the Tony Award-winning musical Nine at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8, in Merrick Lecture Hall.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Richard Hartzell at 410-337-6149 or richard.hartzell@goucher.edu.

Nine is the musical adaption of Federico Fellini’s autobiographical film 8 ½, about the mid-life crisis of celebrated film director Guido Contini. As his 40th birthday approaches, Contini’s energies and creativity have begun to wane, along with his relationships with his wife, his mistress, and a protégée actress. The score by Maury Yeston is filled with haunting melodies and musically and vocally challenging ensemble singing.

The original 1982 musical won five Tony Awards for best musical, best original score, best featured actress in a musical, best costume design, and best direction of a musical. A 2003 revival of the musical won two Tony Awards.

Nine is also being turned into a major motion picture directed by Rob Marshall and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Penélope Cruz, Dame Judy Dench, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, and Sophia Loren. The move is schedule to arrive in theaters this November.

Goucher’s production of Nine will be performed by a cast of one man and 15 women. Professor Lisa Weiss will lead a small combo to accompany the singers.
