The 2009 Dancers in Action Spring Dance Concert—held on Thursday, April 23, and Friday, April 24—will feature Goucher students performing works by guest artists Armando Luna and Mino Nicolas.
Both days’ events will take place at 8 p.m. in Kraushaar Auditorium and are open to the public. Reservations can be made by calling 410-337-6333 or e-mailing boxoffice@goucher.edu; tickets are $15 for general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens. Tickets will also be available at the door.
Luna, Goucher’s ballet guest artist and the artistic director of the Atlanta Ballet Centre Theatre, choreographed “Suddenly Schubert” for Goucher students to perform. The work is a neoclassical ballet with a slight contemporary edge.
Nicolas, Goucher’s modern dance guest artist and the former artistic director and regisseiur of the Doris Humphrey Repertory Dance Company, has set six reconstructed Doris Humphrey works on Goucher students. Students will perform “Soaring,” “Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor,” “Etude Patetico,” “Sarabande,” “The Call/Breath of Fire,” and “Two Ecstatic Themes.”
Goucher Dance Instructor Katherine Ferguson has also set a work on Goucher students. Students will perform the Jewels variations from the third act of “Sleeping Beauty.”
Three Goucher students will also début works.
Hillary Hoffman ’10 and John Hoobyar ’11 choreographed “Grounds for Play,” a piece about two children discovering each other and themselves through play.
Senior Bridget Struthers’ piece “Rising and Falling” is influenced by the Tarantella, an Italian/Mediterranean folk dance designed to cleanse the body of a toxic spider bite. Struthers’ piece explores the themes of community, being alone, composure giving way to chaos, and the innermost workings of a woman’s mind.
