What is Community Service?

The Goucher College Community Service Program offers a range of opportunities for students to volunteer in schools, non-profit organizations, and social service agencies throughout the Greater Baltimore area.  These opportunities range from one-time service commitments to more long-term, often weekly, volunteer positions.  For example, Goucher students can volunteer weekly as tutors and mentors with the Hampden Family Center in Baltimore City or Yorkwood Elementary School (Baltimore City Public School), or once or twice a year with the American Red Cross Blood Drive or the Sandtown-Winchester branch of Habitat for Humanity. They also may become involved in asset-based community development in partnership with organizations such as Unite Here or Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development. While the Community Service Programs are not directly affiliated with individual academic courses, there are work-study positions available at several of our volunteer sites.

Please contact Jennifer Bess, Coordinator of Community Service (410-337-6483, jbess@goucher.edu), if you have any questions about Community Service opportunities or would like to know more about a work-study position within the Community Service Program.
