Building Special Education Student Learning through Digital Storytelling CANCELLED

This is a 4 week online course with a June 18 onsite orientation date.
This online course is designed to meet the needs of classromm teachers of special education students who struggle with motivation, reading, writing or all three. The digital storytelling model is based on the idea that oral language develops first. Building on this premise, students with learning disabilities who have difficulty with writing, tell their story orally and then turn their story into a digital format by adding pictures, video, or clip art, etc. In this course, the participant learns how to use digital storytelling techniques to reinforce students' higher order thinking skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Participants will explore how to differentiate instruction using various digital storytelling features such as recording sound and addind text. Participants will also learn how the digital storytelling process allows students to concentrate on sentence structure and other foundation skills without focusing on the struggles that typically arise when teaching these skills as a focused lesson.

Writing Stories and Books for Children and Young Adults

This is a 4 week online course with a June 18 onsite orientation date.
This online course is designed to teach students the craft of writing for children, including picture books, books for the elementary and middle schools and youg adult literature. Participants will become familiar with the various genres of children's literature and learn about the publication process. Students will develop their creative writing, produce written material and offer feedback to and from other students and the instructor. This course is open to both educators and anyone who is interested in writing for children. Maximum 12 people.
