Brain Research: Implications for Classroom Teachers

This class provides an opportunity to learn about the latest in brain research in education. Works by leading experts such as Marilee Sprenger, Eric Jensen, and Patricia Wolfe will be studied. Research from the neurosciences has greatly improved our understanding of the learning process; participants will gain a foundation on which to base educational decisions and have an opportunity to translate research into classroom practice. Knowing and Teaching the Autistic Student in the General Ed. Classroom

This course is designed to help teachers learn strategies and techniques to incorporate into their classrooms to support students with high functioning autism. Participants will be introduced to the complexity of autism and will discuss theories, strategies, and practices to apply during classroom instruction. Teachers will gain a better understanding of key issues surrounding the autistic student in the general education classroom, such as how to achieve academic success; adjust to behavioral challenges, as well as foster social perception and social thinking skills. This course will also address effective strategies for communicating with parents and will include experiences for the educator to see the child with autism through the family's perspective.

Foundations of Reading and Language Arts_ Secondary (Part 1)

An understanding of the research and theories underlying approaches to the development of reading and written language. Strategies for developing skills and integrating them into broader areas of the curriculum. Exploration of authors, literature, and texts for reading and as models for writing (Maryland State Department of Education approved course in reading). Only students pursuing secondary certification should register for this course.
