This class provides an opportunity for participants to learn about the latest in brain research in education. Works by leading experts such as Marilee Sprenger, Eric Jensen, and Patricia Wolfe will be studied.  Research from the neurosciences has greatly improved our understanding of the learning process; participants will gain a foundation on which to base educational decisions and have an opportunity to translate research into everyday classroom practice.   Elementary, Middle, Secondary

Supporting Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders through Inclusive Practices

This course is designed to help general and special educators apply strategies and techniques to support students of all ages with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the general education environment. This introductory course will focus primarily on the needs of students who exhibit characteristics of high functioning autism or Asperger's Syndrome.  Participants will be introduced to the complexity of the spectrum of autism and will discuss theories, strategies, and practices to apply during classroom instruction.  Participants also will gain a better understanding of key issues related to inclusive practices, such as how to achieve academic success, adjust to behavioral challenges, as well as foster social perception and social thinking skills.  In addition, this course will address effective strategies for communicating with parents and will include experiences for the educator to see the child with autism through the family's perspective.  Elementary, Middle, High

Teachers as Writers, Writer as Teachers

This course is designed for teachers who are engaged, or soon to be engaged, in the teaching of writing to students of all ages, and for teachers who are interested in exploring their own creative writing potential and developing fiction and non-fiction projects.  In this course, participants will examine current methodologies for the teaching of writing, exploring new approaches and techniques. The course will provide strategies and exercises for writing and publishing at all levels, will encourage classroom teachers to develop their own writing skills, and will help them to further their teaching abilities through the study and practice of the craft.  Elementary, Middle, High
